Clemson University Advanced Materials Innovation Complex

Early coordination helped address rooftop steel systems, elevator support structures and utility conflicts before installation.

GPLA partnered with DPR Construction to provide delegated design, steel detailing and secondary steel detailing services for Clemson University's Advanced Materials Innovation Complex (AMIC), a 143,000-square-foot research facility in Clemson, South Carolina. The four-story facility features a concrete structural system and serves as a cornerstone research building for Clemson's Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Built within the constraints of an active university campus, the project required coordination among project teams and building systems. Key challenges included coordinating complex rooftop platforms and mechanical screening systems, integrating elevator support structures with the manufacturer and avoiding clashes between project utilities and trade scopes throughout the facility.

Working alongside DPR, the steel fabricator, and key trade partners, GPLA helped translate design intent into coordinated, fabrication-ready details for stairs, rails, elevator beams, secondary structures, rooftop platforms, and walkways. Early coordination helped identify potential conflicts before installation, reducing field rework and supporting alignment among project teams during construction.
