Confidential Life Science Renovation

Sunnyvale, California

Field evaluations and engineering assessments helped address missing building documentation, evolving equipment requirements and coordination challenges within an occupied laboratory facility.

GPLA partnered with DPR Construction to provide delegated engineering services for the renovation and conversion of more than 21,000 square feet of office and laboratory space within a two-story facility for a confidential life science customer in Sunnyvale, California. The project was driven by an accelerated schedule and the customer's speed-to-market objectives.

With original building drawings unavailable at project onset, the team relied on field evaluations to assess existing conditions and support ongoing procurement and delegated design activities. Additional challenges included limited equipment data, seismic anchorage requirements for large equipment components and coordination within the existing facility.

GPLA's scope included interior wall design, soffit design, non-structural cold-formed steel design, structural support for acoustical ceiling systems and seismic anchorage engineering. Working closely with DPR's SPW drywall and acoustical ceiling team, GPLA helped address field conditions, equipment coordination challenges and inspection issues encountered within the existing facility.

The project demonstrates GPLA's ability to support renovation projects through existing-conditions assessments, rapid assessment of field conditions and close collaboration with project teams to address evolving requirements while maintaining schedule objectives.
